WONDER // Kundalini Workshop

Sunday December 13th // 2:30pm – 4:30pm

The theme for this session is wonder. There is no compass, no map for this moment in time. We are indeed in uncharted territory and so it is an opportunity for us to write the new story and to explore the depths of the unknown. We have a chance to transcend what we think we know, what is “normal” and go into the wilderness of ourselves and our communal experience and create and forge new paths, understanding and ways of being. We are the pioneers of this moment. The focus on this one will be strengthening the respiratory system and being in WONDER.

I am excited and curious to boldy and vulnerably go on this journey of discovery altogether. May we find space in these classes to “feel all the feels” and find community within our selves and each other. Community care is self care. All my love and thanks for your presence here, Kasia

Intro to Yoga Mudra

Mudras: It is said, in Yoga philosophy and physiology, that the universe is made of a life force that flows through all things. It’s name is Prana. This life force moves out side of us but also expresses itself within us. How we breath, how we move, how we think and how we feel.

The most common way, in Yoga practice to move, shift and shape Prana is via the breath (Pranayama). But there are other deeper and subtle ways to manipulate this force. Through movement, through meditation and through Mudra.

Mudra are commonly known as hand seals, which can be used to move Prana in subtle and powerful ways.

In this workshop, Steve will explore some philosophy as to the HOW and WHY of Mudra.

We’ll also dive into some of the more common Mudras as well as some others that he has found to be profoundly powerful in his life.

When: Sunday October 25th 2020 @ 2:30pm – 4:30pm

Intro to Asana

Unfortunately, there is no one right way to practice Yoga Asana (postures).  And although there can be some very useful guidelines, as Judith Lasater has been known to say, “We don’t use our bodies to get into the poses. We use the poses to get into our bodies.”

In this workshop, Steve Ferrell (E-RYT200, YACEP) will explore applying some important anatomical, biomechanical and movement-based principals to some of the most common Yoga postures found in almost any class, so that beginners can then move more confidently and effortlessly into their own bodies.

The benefit of learning these principles is that they can then be applied to almost any other pose, which then opens us up to approaching the body as it is, safely and mindfully in any given moment.

When: Sunday November 8th 2020 @ 2:30pm – 4:30pm

In this workshop, the eight limbs of Yoga will be introduced, and the last four limbs will be explored in some detail through talk, dialogue and practice of meditation.

Monika Benkovich

Monika’s journey from growing up in a bar in downtown Hamilton, to living as an artist and mental health activist in the Bay Area of California and the Sea-To-Sky in BC, to the creative formation of Kali Ma CHURCH has been a wavey one.⠀

Her love of music, authenticity, artistry and people from all walks of life are the foundations of KMC. She believes her souls purpose is to create and connect and to help others find their own journey through this process.⠀

Monika has experience with depression and body abuse and has made it a priority to understand her empathic abilities as she believes there to be a direct link to earlier years of not understanding her sensitivities and struggles.⠀

Her interest in spirituality began with @noahlevine108 Dharma Punx followed by an EE position at @delasolyoga years later. Kayla Whitney

I am an artist and muralist happily quarantined in my home studio in Hamilton. I maintain an active studio practice where I explore relationships between 80s minimalism and Victorian maximalism through representational image making and gestural mark making. This quarantine has allowed me to really focus on creative freedom and further explore the question of ‘what would I make if I could make anything?’⠀

I am a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design, and have extensive experience creating murals, illustrations and other commissioned works for both the public and private realms. Through my businesses, Koe Design which is entering its 4th year, I have had the privilege of working with communities and striving to find the best and most engaging way to bring art to the people and places that need it most.

Candice Klein

Candice is a passionate educator, certified Reiki practitioner, Tarot reader, and Hatha Yoga Teacher.

She began her career as a high school teacher, with a background in English literature, philosophy, and cultural studies. After spending time teaching in London, England, she saw a deep need to help others learn to connect to themselves on a more spiritual level.

After years of practicing yoga, meditation, and using many other healing modalities, she has explored the depths of her own soul and is passionate about helping others do the same. She is most passionate about helping others realize that they are multifaceted, multi-dimensional, autonomous, spiritual beings full of raw potential.

Kat Sewell

Fascinated with understanding how life looks from many angles, I’ve found myself working in a veterinary clinic, a hospice, architecture firm, as a trip facilitator in Kenya, a coffee shop, the film industry, music festival production and facilitating workshops, yoga and meditation classes.⠀

I’m super passionate about bringing people together for a unified purpose. ⠀

I’ve learned through a lot of these experiences the importance of carving out space in our lives for mental health in the same capacity that we hold space for our physical health. Exercising the muscles of the mind, if you will.⠀

As a community organizer, I’ve also seen profound healing from coming together with a purpose. This approach seems to achieve a balancing point of low pressure and highly productive.

Peter Monos

I’m a Hamilton local with lots of experience in the city. Through Teacher Trainings, classes, workshops, lectures, reading and life experience, I’ve connected to life in a way that is meaningful to me. What I have picked up through my own practice and exploration I try to bring to the practice I show others. Question everything and only take with you the things that improve your journey.

Lu Caruso

Lu’s interest in movement began in 2009, initiated by a struggle with her mental health. She began seeking alternative practices to assist in developing healthier coping strategies, repairing her relationship with herself, and to support continued growth.⠀

Lu is a community activist and has a passion for social justice, and building stronger communities. She believes that her movement practice has assisted with her healing and allowed her to facilitate an experience where hopefully other’s have a safe space to do the same. Lu teaches with specific emphasis on breathing and mindfulness, with a focus on developing awareness of the patterns and habits of the mind and body.

Petra Sepsi

Petra Sepsi is a 500hr certified Yoga Teacher who has been practicing for over five years. Within that time, Petra fell completely in love with the practice and wanted to share the amazing gift of Yoga with others, not only the physical benefits but the self love and inner peace one finds during their practice.

Petra completed her Hot Yoga Teacher Training in 2014 in Los Angeles. Since then she has had a passion for teaching and helping her students see the results they deserve. As well, she completed her YTT 200 in 2015 and her Pilates training in 2016 and Barre in 2019.

This breath of knowledge combined with Petra’s enthusiastic nature makes her classes both energetic and peaceful. Petra is extremely knowledgeable in many styles such as Vinyasa, Power Flow, Yin, and Hot Yoga to name a few. Her classes always bring the same heat as the hot yoga room!

Joey Mercer

My name is Joey, and I am an alcoholic/drug addict in recovery. I live with social anxiety, borderline personality disorder, bulimia and major depression. None of these things define me. Recovery is about embracing and changing.

After living in chaos with my issues I was finally hurt enough that I was able to make a change. I have gone from addict to a professional addiction counsellor through studies at McMaster University. I have operated youth oriented mental health recovery groups and community peer support and awareness groups. I offer individualized addiction treatment and life coaching. I am currently studying at Mohawk College in the Social Service Worker Program.

I tell my story loud and proud.

PERSONALIZE a program of recovery that will work for you.

RECOGNIZE every effort and every inch of progress you make.

Amanda Rose Campanaro

Amanda Rose Campanaro has been exploring the world of energy healing and divination for her entire life, but has taken her studies further over the last five years. She began her journey into holistic wellness and Magick after beginning a career in social work and recognizing flaws within the systemic  approaches. She quickly saw an opportunity to step outside the box of conventional counselling and began exploring Reiki and other forms of energy healing, Tarot, Astrology and essential oils.

Today she specializes in personal development and helping people regain their rhythmic connection to the world around them through mindfulness, Magick and breath. She is an avid traveller and kitchen with and has taken all of her teachings abroad and infused them into her work.

Being an intuitive psychic, Amandaoften works by the astor-lunar calendar and uses techniques, tools, rituals and practises that are aligned with the earth and the Cosmo’s natural rhythm. By holding space to step outside the box of convention mindfulness Amanada thrives off creating experiences that will speak to your soul and initiate massive shifts in your life.

Risa Maldonado

I’ve been a mover my whole life.

From a young age I was involved in a whole slew of athletics. Swimming, diving, soccer, gymnastics, I did em’ all.

When I got to high school I fulfilled my 14 year old life long dream of becoming a cheerleader and blissfully lived this dream successfully for 10 amazing years.

After retiring from cheerleading I found yoga. Being an avid practitioner for 4 years, I completed my 200 hour Ashtanga and Hatha Yoga Teacher Training in November of 2016. Unlike many, I had very little desire to teach after my teacher training.

I felt like I had opened 8 books and only read the first chapter of each. I went deeper into my practice and continued to dig and search.

Keeping a light teaching schedule I continued to expand my knowledge in breathwork, anatomy, strength training and conditioning and the mind-body connection.

Training with leaders in the movement industry such as; Kathryn Bruni Young and Robin Lacambra.

Now four year later I am ready to share this buildup of knowledge.

Alisha Ferreira

Alisha’s joy of movement began with martial arts & the dance floor.

The mix of energies had proved to her that work & play can exist harmoniously in any movement practice. After completing her yoga teacher training her mission became clear, to help every body find sweetness and let it flow.

Having a theatre performance background has allowed her to explore physical expression to the fullest. Now working with artists as a mentor, she helps develop confidence in expressing the messages our bodies provide. A firm believer in letting the body lead, she often mixes styles of movement. Yoga, being a constant love, is at the root of all her class creations.

Let loose. Let be. Let the body talk.

Alex Piccolo

Alex began training as a classical ballerina.

This was her initial exposure to movement and expression, and she developed a love for the discipline and focus of this training which she has carried with her into everything she does now.

Once she retired her ballet slippers, she took an interest in rowing for a few years. She fell in love with mornings on the water and the competitive nature of the sport.

Dipping her toes in as many physical disciplines as she could, She picked up boxing.

She continues to find the importance of disciplining both mind and body together. She is a firm believer that perseverance and strength of the mind translates directly to almost limitless potential in the body.

Anyone who has taken a class with her knows this very well. Alex’s classes are like a box of chocolates, you never really know what you’re going to get.

Currently, she is training as a manual student at the Canadian Academy of Osteopathy.

You can find her buried under anatomy books with a big cup of coffee, spending time outdoors or with her big, Italian family.

All that you need in her class is your body (which presents itself different everyday) and a mindset to persevere.

Gerald Moore

Hi I’m Gerald.

I’m a husband, brother, son and father.

So how did I get involved in Yoga? My wife is a yogi and although I heard all about the physical and mental benefits of yoga it wasn’t something I was comfortable doing.

To be honest, I didn’t want to look stupid.

I’d tried a few classes in the past and always felt two steps behind.

I was spending more time looking at what everybody else in the class was doing, trying desperately to catch up.

It was a disaster. I walked out mid class more than once. Rolled up my mat and sulked away. Yoga wasn’t for me.

I couldn’t understand why I couldn’t do this as well as everybody else, I was an athletic guy. …yet yoga was a mystery.

Then…..my wife organized a camping weekend….at least I thought it was a camping weekend. After I had committed to going, I discovered it was a yoga retreat…I felt duped, I was cranky, I offered my daughter money to take my place…but do you know what?  My wife won, I went on the yoga retreat…and it was amazing!

The other “campers” were fantastic. They were super friendly, funny and completely down to earth. Nobody cared that I didn’t know the poses, nobody even noticed.

They were encouraging and super supportive. Turns out the biggest obstacle to my yoga journey was my ego.

One of the people on the yoga retreat was a teacher, she was funny, irreverent and swore like a sailor. My kinda people. She invited me to take her class when we returned to the city, so I did.

After a few of Pips classes, I had an epiphany; why didn’t anybody in the class look like me? The non yogis? The beer league hockey player? The former athletes? Where was the yoga for the people by the people? The folks in their mid 40’s who had tight hips, tight hamstrings, little to no flexibility? the people that were forced to abandon the remote when it fell to the floor?

Why weren’t they doing this? Probably the same reasons it took me so long…ego.

It was around that time that I decided to become a yoga teacher. It still sounds crazy now.

I got teased unmercifully by pals, but I pushed through and completed the course. One of two men in a class of 24. Many of the same guys who poked fun at me are now taking my classes.

If I can do this, you can do this.

Michelle Hudecki

Michelle took her first yoga class in 2006 with Alex Bovkis at a local church and became a regular student.
